Unit 32-IDENTS

Task 1
understand the purpose and design of idents

This is a timeline of bbc idents from 1953 to 2009:

Over the years BBC idents have become more creative and become colour.
I think that BBC Ident have got better over the years due to the idents have become more creative.
The purpose of BBC idents are to split up programmes, they do this because they don’t have adverts to have in between programmes.

BBC has made their idents identifiable over the years by basing their ident on the world:
I think that BBC has done this because they want to show that their channel is suitable for everyone, and has a variety of shows. However they decided to take away the picture of the world but still kept the shape by using more creative things for example:

I think that BBC has created better and more creative indents over the past few years.

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is a British public service broadcaster, headquartered at Broadcasting House in the City of Westminster, London. It is the largest broadcaster in the world, with about 23,000 staff.

BBC is to inform, educate and entertain.

The BBC have used their idents based on the shape of the world throughout the years however they have used this idea in many ways some fun and exciting and other before the 90s was simple e.g: the earth.

When does the ident play?
The Ident plays in between programmes.
How often is it visible during 3 hours viewing time?
It depends on what programs are showing in those 3 hours for example if there are four programs there would more likely only be four or five idents on BBC.

How many idents does the channel currently use?
Six:

Is there a theme across the idents? What remains the same?
The BBC have used their idents based on the shape of the world throughout the years however they have used this idea in many ways some fun and exciting and other before the 90s was simple e.g: the earth.
 Task 2
Understanding the opportunities and limitations of on-screen graphic representation

Idents from different channels:

Channel 5 idents

Channel 5
Channel 5 idents have been very simple over the years however they have started using bright and bold coloured themes.
They have also started to use more creative scenes to put into their indents, for example:
Someone swimming
A Police chase
And Christmas themes

At present 94% of all UK households can receive Five, equating to around 54.3m people. In theory, we can be seen in 100% of all homes with the use of digital technology. Therefore, homes that do not receive a terrestrial signal for Five can do so via a digital feed (digital terrestrial-Freeview / digital satellite / digital cable). The average daily reach is around 19.4% or the equivalent of 10.9m individuals. From the launch of Five US and Five Life (now Fiver) in October 2006, until the end of 2007, just under 34 million people tuned-in to sample the programming of either one or both of the channels. On a weekly basis, more than 8.2 million people chose to tune-in to our digital channels in 2007.

Sky idents

Sky idents
Sky has gone for a more professional side for most of their channels. However, Sky 1, 2 and 3 channels have gone for more creative side, Sky 1, 2 and 3 have used number that explode in different themed scenes:
In a twister
On a roof
TV programme (Bones)

Quote from: (http://www.skymedia.co.uk/Channels/entertainment/sky-1.aspx)
Sky1 is the most watched non-terrestrial channel in Sky homes, attracting nearly 14m unique viewers every month. Sky1 distinguishes itself from rival channels with award-winning, exclusive US and homegrown drama, talked-about entertainment formats and distinctive factual entertainment series.

Channel 4 idents

Channel 4 idents
Channel 4 idents have been very creative with their idents they have used floating objects to create the number 4.
They do this on several different scenes:
In the city
Petrol station
At flats
And more.

ITV idents

ITV idents

ITV has always changed the way they do their idents, the only thing that ITV have kept in their idents are the colours yellow and blue. Over the years ITV have been very simple and just showed there logo, it was only in late 2006 ITV have started to become a bit more creative.

Over the year’s idents have become more creative, however different channels have created successful and unsuccessful idents.
BBC have been very successful with their idents if it’s for the world cup or Eastenders. BBC has made sure they kept their idents based on the shape of the world. However ITV has always changed the way they do their idents, the only thing that ITV have kept is the colours yellow and blue. Over the years ITV have been very simple and just showed there logo, it was only in late 2006 ITV have started to become a bit more creative.
Whereas channel 4 has always been very creative with idents and used floating objects to create the number 4. Therefore I believe that channel 4 have been successful with ident over the years due to the fact that they have been very creative with their idents.

Task3
be able to originate and plan television idents to a brief

Here are some ideas of our pac-man animation:

Narrative Structure

Storylines
Pac-man is chasing the fruit around while coloured ghosts are chasing Pac-man around the board, another idea we have had is instead of Pac-man being chased by the ghosts we would have Pac-man chasing the ghosts because they are taking his fruit drops
Sets/Backgrounds
We are going to having a rectangle, square or circle board with blocks spread out to make a maze like structure for the character to move around and collect the fruit circles or squares , we are going to try a range of backgrounds, for example different colours and different shapes different layouts for example diagonal mazes straight mazes or curved. We are using plastercine to make Pac-man and the ghosts and using Lego for the layout and backgrounds.
Scenarios
Pac-man goes out to collect the fruit drops left by the four ghosts and while he is the four ghosts set out to stop him stealing their fruit drops, Pac-man has three lives to eat them all before its ‘game over’ along the way he can eat these special fruit drops that make the ghosts eatable and to stop them from eating him for 20 seconds.
Audio/Soundtrack
For the audio/soundtrack the best sort of music would be up tempo songs because of how fast the characters move or to make it feel more like a chase scene and more tense for the audience to watch to make it feel more exciting.

Task4
be able to produce a television ident
